Hot Water FAQ

Q: What is an instantaneous water heater?
A: An instantaneous water heater is a small heating unit that heats the water just when called for, or on demand. These units have no storage capability; can be situated centrally or at the point of use for smaller units.

Q: Does my water heater need any maintenance?
A: In hard water areas such as Alberta, the life of a water heater may be extended and its efficiency maintained by flushing a quantity of water out of the drain valve at the bottom of the tank every six months or so to prevent mineral particles from accumulating. Be sure you feel competent to do this without causing personal injury or damage. Refer to the water heater owner’s handbook for step-by-step instructions. Alternatively, have a qualified plumbing contractor perform this task.

Q: Can I shut off the gas water heater if I am going away for extended periods?
A: If you go away for more than a day, turn down the gas water heater thermostat to “vacation” setting; this will shut off everything but the pilot light, saving energy by not having to maintain the stored water at a pre-set temperature.

Q: I recently set my water heater temperature back and have noticed spotting and soap residue on the dishes. Do I need to turn the water heater thermostat back up?
A: Part of the problem may be the dishwasher detergent. Try a new liquid dishwasher soap that generally works well at lower water temperatures. If this doesn’t help, gradually increase the temperature and continue to monitor.
