Lighting FAQ

Q: Don't light bulbs use more energy to turn off and on frequently?
A: No, if the light will be off for more than five seconds, turn it off, you'll save energy.

Q: Can compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) be used outside in the winter?
A: Yes, there are CFLs that can be used outdoors in temperatures as low as -30o C as long as the CFLs are in fully enclosed fixtures. The package should indicate a low temperature rating; check it to make sure it suits the local climate.

Q: Do CFLs work with dimmers and in “tri-light” sockets?
A: Standard CFLs don’t. Some CFLs are specially designed to work with dimmers or in tri-light lamps. Check the package to confirm specifications.
