Incandescent Lamp Phase Out
The Government of Canada is setting minimum energy performance standards for general service lamps that would phase out inefficient light bulbs in common applications through the regulations under Canada’s Energy Efficiency Act. General service lamps are defined as any lamp or bulb that provides functional illumination.
These performance standards were finalized in December 2008 and used input from all stakeholders including provincial governments, electric utilities, manufacturers and distributors. The standards will be effective beginning January 1, 2012.
The standards' objective is to phase out inefficient lighting. The first target for phase out is the most common household light bulb, the standard medium screw base A19 incandescent lamp. Energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are readily available to replace these incandescent lamps. Most CFLs sold in Canada have the Energy Star® symbol, which identifies they have been tested to a high standard for their efficiency, life, and light output.
