Sub-Meters

Advisory for sub-meter consumers

Some bulk-metered buildings in Alberta (like apartments and condominiums) use sub-metering installations to allocate energy costs to occupants.

Electricity sub-meters have been around for years. A newer initiative is to use a device called a “heat meter” to allocate the costs associated with a bulk-metered natural gas meter. There are a number of billing, metering and other issues related to sub metering. The Office of the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) is investigating these issues. We are attempting to answer many of the questions consumers have on this subject.

If you have questions related to the sub-metering practices that exist in your building, please call the UCA at 310-4822 or
e-mail us for more information.
