Regulated Rates
What is Regulated Service?
Customers who do not sign a contract for natural gas or electricity are served by a regulated provider. There is only one regulated provider for your geographic area. The regulated rates are reviewed and approved by a regulator and can change from month to month.
The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) regulates the rates charged by regulated providers. These include investor-owned electric and natural gas utilities such as EPCOR Energy Alberta Inc. in the FortisAlberta service territory, Direct Energy Regulated Services in the ATCO service territory, and AltaGas Utilities. In addition, the AUC approves regulated electricity rates for the cities of Calgary (ENMAX Power Corp.) and Edmonton (EPCOR Energy Inc.).
Other municipally owned utilities are regulated by their municipal councils. Rural Electrification Associations (REAs) and Natural Gas Co-operatives are regulated by their member-elected boards.
Who is my regulated provider?
Regulated rate providers of electricity or natural gas serve specific geographical areas of the province. Find your regulated regulated rate provider.
Why the regulated rate may be a better option:
- The regulated rate always provides the current market price.
- There is no early exit fee associated with cancelling the regulated rate service.
- You do not need to sign a contract for this rate.
- If price drops you share in the savings.
- No marketing costs are built into the rate.
- No sales tactics are involved.
Why the regulated rate may not be right for you:
- The regulated rate reflects the current market price, which may be higher than a contract price.
- The regulated rate will have higher price volatility, which may result in less predictable costs for consumers.
